The annual Mount Rainier National Park Associates alpine gardening work party will be Sept. 11. Volunteers will be planting wildflower seedlings at Sunrise on the project to convert a historic campground area back into alpine meadows.
Participants should plan to meet at the south side of Sunrise parking lot between 8:30-9 a.m. that day. The work is generally done by 3 p.m.
Be prepared for almost any fall weather. Bring a sun hat and sunscreen, rain gear, plus a lunch, plenty of water to drink, gardening gloves and a digging tool you like using. If you have no gardening tools, the park can provide small hand tools. You will be working on your hands and knees doing the planting, so if you like to use a pad for your knees, bring it along too. The work site is about a mile from the parking lot so plan on carrying everything you want to bring.
There is no charge for volunteers to enter the park. When you enter at the White River Entrance, tell the attendant that you will be doing volunteer work on the meadow restoration project at Sunrise.
If you plan to join the group, send an e-mail to John Titland, volunteer coordinator, at volunteer@mount-rainier.org. Indicate that you are coming and how many volunteers you will bringing with you.
