There’s still time to enter your dishes

Think you’re a good cook?

Prove it. Start cooking and enter the Puyallup Fair.

The fair sponsors close to 100 categories of food contests. It’s free to enter. First- and second-place winners, and in some cases third-place finishers, win products, gift baskets or cash prizes of $3 to $200.

Though the deadline for most of the preserved food contests has passed, there’s still time to enter other food categories:

 • Today is the deadline to register for special contests that are judged in public during the fair. (Most food contests are judged before the fair starts.) Entry forms must be postmarked by today for the Great American Spam Championship on Sept. 15, the C&H Sugar Parent-Child Halloween Decorated Cookie Contest on Sept. 17, the Puyallup Fair Plum Pie Contest on Sept. 20, the original Famous Fair Scone Contest on Sept. 22, and the Best Jam and Jelly Contest on Sept. 24.

 • Competitors in the “culinary arts” categories, including baked goods and candies, must bring their entries to the fair’s Home Arts Department on Sept. 8 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. On entry day, enter the department through the service gate at Fifth Street S.W., off 15th Ave. S.W., or through the Gold Gate at Ninth Ave. S.W. and Meridian St. S.

 • No early registration is necessary to enter your most decadent chocolate dessert or treat for the Ghirardelli Chocolate Championship on Sept. 13 or to enter a homemade salsa in the Salsa Showdown on Sept. 16.

 • For entry forms, contest categories and rules, go to www.thefair.com or call the home arts office at 253-841-5063.

 • The Puyallup Fair runs Sept. 10-26 at 110 Ninth Ave. S.W., Puyallup.

Article corrected: The deadline to enter the Ball Fresh Preserving (canning) contest has already passed.
