TNT comments: Frequently Asked Questions

I submitted my comment and it's not showing. What's up with that?
Sometimes comments do not show immediately after submission. If so, it's not because of some mysterious moderator's sinister and conspiratorial plan to usurp First Amendment** rights, but rather our automated spam filter.

Spam comes in many forms, but is usually a repeated, unsolicited attempt by a person or persons to promote a commercial enterprise. Spammers are very annoying and very persistent. We get a lot of spam submitted to our forums and, like you, we hate it.

Here are some common traits of "regular" comments that are automatically flagged as spam by our Disqus comment platform. Don't view the below traits as hard-and-fast rules, but rather guidelines for what you should avoid with your comments. One of the traits by itself may not be enough to get your comment flagged as spam, but it may be.

1. Long comments - Spammers frequently dump lists of products, thinking the amount of words will demand attention. Disqus uses word count to determine if this is the case. Try to limit your comment to fewer than 400 words.

2. No line breaks - Similar to the long comment trigger above, a lack of line breaks (i.e. the RETURN or ENTER keys) can indicate a spam comment. If you have more than a few sentences, add a line break or two.

3. Too many links - spam comments typically contain more than one link. Disqus might consider a legitimate comment with several (two or more) links to be spam.

4. Links buried within text - Another common spammer trick is to bury a link within an otherwise innocuous paragraph. Try to introduce your link. It's best to do that on a new line.

5. Duplicate comments - If you see that one of your comments is marked for review, don't post it again. All that will do is cement Disqus' view that you're a spammer, and it will increase the likelihood that your future comments are marked as spam.

We periodically review the spam queue and approve comments that should show. This may take up to 24 hours on weekdays and longer on weekends.

** The First Amendment applies to governmental -- any level whether federal, state or local -- attempts to restrict free expression and not to companies such as The News Tribune (which hosts this forum). Here is the First Amendment:"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." Although we at The News Tribune appreciate your cooperation in following our simple commenting guidelines, and desire to apply them fairly to every commenter, the TNT reserves the right to delete your comment for any reason.

My Avatar is not showing with my post. How do I fix that.?
Pluck avatars will not be migrated to the new commenting system. We have created a default Avatar for readers that log in using their TheNewsTribune.com username and password. If you want to display a unique Avatar, you will need to upload one to Disqus, Facebook or Twitter, and then post on TheNewsTribune.com using that account instead.

Alternatively, you can upload a new avatar to your TheNewsTribune account using the service Gravatar.

Gravatar is a website that allows you to attach an avatar to any account on the Internet based on the e-mail address you use for accounts.

For example, if you have signed on to TheNewsTribune.com with the e-mail "user@yahoo.com," register that e-mail with Gravatar, upload your icon to that Gravatar account, and you will then have the icon show up next to your posts on TheNewsTribune.com. With the exception of your e-mail address (and a password), you do not have provide Gravatar with any other personal information.

Note that Gravatar can take several hours to sync with Disqus.

Can I sign in using my Facebook or Twitter login?
Yes. You can log in and comment using your existing TheNewsTribune.com username and password, or use your login and password for Disqus, Facebook and Twitter.

If I run into problems or want to share feedback, who should I contact?
For problems with article commenting or feedback on the changes, please email webmaster@thenewstribune.com.
