Students without transportation to school would be given an excused absence, the school district said. After-school activities at Goldenview Middle School have been canceled.

  The National Merit Scholarship Corporation recently awarded Leslie Ojeaburu of Thomas Jefferson High School a National Achievement $2,500 scholarship.

  Nine Whatcom County schools are among the 275 statewide that educators have selected for the 2011 Washington Achievement Awards.

  The schools will be honored April 25 at Mariner High School in Mukilteo, itself an award winner in the language arts category.

  Nooksack Valley School District garnered the most awards among Whatcom County's school districts. Its schools and their awards are:

  Heights Elementary School in the Middleton School District is Idaho’s newest winner in the Healthier U.S. School Challenge, the Idaho State Department of Education announced Monday.

  Heights won a Silver Award and will receive $1,000, a plaque and a banner to display at the school. The healthy school challenge is a U.S. Department of Agriculture program to acknowledge schools that improve nutrition and food quality in their schools, provide students with more healthy choices and enhance their physical activity program.
