Several South Sound schools were among those honored recently with Washington Achievement Awards by the state superintendent of public instruction and the state Board of Education.
Statewide, 186 schools were recognized as top performers in seven categories. Awards are based on the Washington Achievement Index developed by the state board. Award winners will be honored with a ceremony April 27 at Lincoln High School in Tacoma.
Local award winners, and the categories in which they were honored, include: Hazelwood Elementary, Auburn, overall excellence; Federal Way Public Academy, overall excellence; Mirror Lake Elementary, Federal Way, overall excellence; Hudtloff Middle School, Lakewood, overall excellence; Gildo Rey Elementary, Auburn, math; Gig Harbor High School, extended graduation rate; Lincoln High School, improvement; West Auburn High School, improvement; Custer Elementary, Lakewood, closing achievement gaps; Mark Twain Elementary, Federal Way, closing achievement gaps; Ferucci Junior High, Puyallup, closing achievement gaps.
