Cristie Kerr and amateur Amy Anderson were tied for the lead at 2-under par in the opening round of the U.S. Women’s Open on Thursday when play was called off for the day because of thunderstorms in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Kerr had three holes remaining, and Anderson had six to go when the sirens sounded, clearing the East Course at the Broadmoor.

Yani Tseng, trying to complete the career Grand Slam, was among the 72 players who hadn’t begun their afternoon rounds when the bad weather hit. Defending champion Paula Creamer will also start her first round today, weather permitting.

David Toms withdrew from the British Open next week because of a hip injury. He played three holes Thursday at the John Deere Classic in Silvis, Ill., before pulling out and notifying the Royal & Ancient that he will not play the Open. He’ll be replacedby England’s Simon Dyson. ... Robert Garrigus also pulled out of the John Deere because of a back problem. ... Kris Blanks birdied his final five holes for an 8-under 63 to grab the first-round lead by one stroke at the John Deere Classic. Gig Harbor’s Kyle Stanley is two shots back. ... Second-ranked Lee Westwood and tour newcomer Mark Tullo of Chile shot 7-under 65s to share the lead after the first round of the Scottish Open in Inverness.

Then he got rolling with birdies at the fifth (14-foot putt), seventh (14-footer) and eighth holes (11-footer) for his best showing since a second-round 65 at the FedEx St. Jude Classic last month. ... A pretty uneventful for Putnam day got a late boost with two short birdie putts at the 13th and 17th holes.

Tee times today: Gonzales at 6:30 a.m. PDT off the first tee; Stanley at 11:55 a.m. PDT off the first tee; and Putnam at 12:05 p.m. PDT off the 10th tee.
