Suspected burglar released from hospital, booked into jail

A 32-year-old man shot during an apparent attempted burglary in Tacoma’s North End has been booked into the Pierce County Jail.
The man was released from Tacoma General Hospital on Thursday, then interviewed by detectives, police spokesman Mark Fulghum said. Investigators booked the man into jail on suspicion of first-degree burglary, theft of a firearm and unlawful possession of a firearm.
Tacoma police allege the man was burglarizing a home in the 4200 block of Alki Street shortly after 11 a.m. Wednesday. A contractor who was doing work at the house arrived and found an unfamiliar minivan in the driveway.
The contractor called the homeowner, who confirmed that no one should have been at the house, police reported.
The man came outside and spotted the contractor’s pickup blocking the driveway. The man reportedly got into his vehicle and rammed the truck.
The contractor pulled out a gun and shot the man once during a confrontation. Tacoma police officers found the injured man a couple of blocks away.
Detectives interviewed the contractor. They also were looking into the suspected burglar’s background and whether he is connected to any other burglaries in the area.
The department will forward its investigation to the Pierce County Prosecutor’s Office for review and possible charges, Fulghum said.
