The Bethel School Board Tuesday night unanimously approved a two-year contract with district teachers that cushions them from a funding cut handed down by the state Legislature this year.

The school district agreed to use budget reserves to counter a 1.9-percent teacher salary funding cut.

The contract, which covers about 1,000 teachers, counselors, school nurses and other district workers, also calls for increased class size. Elementary class sizes will increase by two, and classes for secondary school students will increase by one.

School starts Sept. 7 in the Spanaway-based school district, which is Pierce County’s third-largest.
