A 52-year-old Southworth man was killed early Saturday in a collision at the intersection of Sedgwick and Long Lake roads in South Kitsap, according to the Washington State Patrol.
Harold L. Keith, 52, of Southworth died at the scene of the crash, which occurred shortly before 2 a.m. The intersection was blocked for more than six hours while police investigated.
Peter M. Sendrak, 23, of Port Orchard was arrested and booked into the Kitsap County Jail on suspicion of vehicular homicide. Investigators believe he was driving drunk.
Troopers say Sendrak was driving a 2003 Infinity G35 east on Sedgwick at a high rate of speed with two passengers, a 27-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man. The Infinity rear-ended a 1990 Geo Prism being driven by Keith.
The impact sent the Prism careening off the road and down a 20-foot embankment. The Infinity continued on the roadway before hitting a guardrail and sign.
Keith was pronounced dead at the scene. The 27-year-old passenger in the Infinity was taken to Harrison Medical Center for treatment of neck and back injuries. The 24-year-old passenger in the Infinity called a friend to pick him up from the scene before law enforcement arrived. He was later found and questioned.
The more than six-hour closure was due to investigators finding a World War II-era pineapple grenade near the scene. A bomb squad determined it to be harmless.
Sendrak was being held on $100,000 bail.
