The state Transportation Department will shut down Seattle’s Alaskan Way Viaduct for nine days starting Oct. 21 so crews can start demolishing a mile-long section near Safeco Field and CenturyLink Field.

It will be the longest closure of the 58-year-old section of Highway 99 that normally carries 110,000 vehicles a day past the downtown waterfront.

The work is part of $3 billion project to replace the viaduct and bore a tunnel under downtown Seattle.
