An estimated 28,000 Tacoma students were back in the classroom with their teachers today, after the threat of a teacher strike was averted for now. A vote Wednesday night by members of the Tacoma Education Association fell about 3 percent short of the 80-percent threshold needed for the union to strike. So they agreed to return to work under their contract that expired Wednesday, while negotiations between the union and the school district continue. As of Thursday afternoon, no talks had been scheduled.
Teachers are scheduled to meet again Sept. 12. If theres a tentative agreement by that date, union members will be able to vote on it. If not, they could take another strike authorization vote.
