Rainier Mountain Festival
What: You don’t have to be a mountain climber to enjoy the 10th annual festival, just have an interest in the sport. Attendees have the chance to meet some of the area’s best know climbers, listen to presentations, try their hand at climbing a rock wall and taking part in a trail run.
When: Saturday, Sept. 11
Where: Rainier Basecamp, 30027 state Route 706 E., Ashford.
Meet the climbers: More than 15 Mount Everest summiters are scheduled to be at the festival. You will have the chance to ask questions, get a book signed and watch slideshows with mountaineers such as Ed Viesturs, Jim Whittaker, Heidi Eichner, Dave Hahn, Caroline George and Melissa Arnot.
Trail run: This 10 a.m. Sept. 11 event is considered one of the classic five-mile runs in the area. The course can be run or walked. The entry fee is $10. Registration begins at 7 a.m. on race day. Go to the website for details and a registration form.
Technique demonstrations: Mountain guides will lead demonstrations in all types of mountaineering techniques, including properly fitting a backpack, stove selection, boot fitting, securing a tent against bad weather and selecting food for your adventure.
Alpine games: Participants can compete in events, such as speed climbing, sled pull, and erect-a-tent.
Raffle: More than $10,000 worth of gear will be raffled off with all proceeds going to the Mount Tahoma Trail Association.
