Question: Why is the speed limit on the new Nalley Valley viaduct on State Route 16 still 40 mph? I’ve been driving it pretty regularly since it opened, and I feel like I’m going to get run over for obeying the speed limit. I’ve experienced everything from horn honking to a one-finger wave and being cut off by angry drivers.
Are there any plans to raise it? – Joshua Barnhart, Tacoma
Answer: It’s under consideration.
The Washington State Department of Transportation has been doing tests with an inclinometer to “ball bank” (a technique for gauging safe speeds on curves) the new ramps at the interchange, and they’re talking with the Washington State Patrol about modifications.
“Our assessment will determine whether to keep the current speed limit in place or modify it,” said Transportation Department spokeswoman Claudia Cornish. “Stay tuned.”
