Five firefighters from West Pierce Fire & Rescue have traveled to New York City to pick up a piece of the destroyed World Trade Center towers.
The fire district, which covers Lakewood and University Place, is the fourth in the South Sound region to receive a steel artifact from the towers, which were destroyed in the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
The West Pierce Fire & Rescue firefighters arrived in New York on Thursday after leaving Monday to drive across country. They have volunteered their time to pick up the 600-pound artifact. Their trip is being paid for with donations.
The firefighters will stay in New York to mark the 10-year anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, then will return home.
West Pierce Fire will host a dedication ceremony for the artifact once the firefighters return. Details of the event or how the piece will be publicly displayed have not been finalized, West Pierce Capt. Jenny Sharp said.
