After all the times Mike Moore has followed his son at the most prestigious amateur golf tournaments in the country, this weekend is his turn.
The 58-year-old owner of The Classic Country Club in Spanaway – and father of PGA Tour professional Ryan Moore – is in the field for the 57th U.S. Senior Men’s Amateur, starting Saturday near Richmond, Va.
It his first time in a USGA championship after seven attempts to qualify.
Moore’s first round at Kinloch Golf Club starts at 5:30 a.m. PDT. After two rounds of stroke play the 156-player field will be reduced to 64 for the match play starting Monday.
Ryan Moore can’t be there – he is preparing for the third FedEx Cup playoff event in Illinois next week – but another son, Jason Moore, who sometimes caddies for Ryan, will caddie for his dad.
“Part of playing kids who beat me all the time … they show me no mercy,” Mike Moore said. “Ryan takes me … to the back tee. And when I ask for strokes, he gives me nothing. I am used to seeing golf courses from their eyes.”
“It is pretty simple,” he said. “All you get is all you get.”
MOGG’S COMING
A seventh set of dates – Oct. 1-2 – has been added to famed golf instructor Brian Mogg’s schedule at Chambers Bay in University Place.
“I am mildly blown away by the attendance because we haven’t had that much marketing,” Mogg said.
Spots are open for the Oct 1-2 dates. Call the pro shop at 253-460-4653, ext. 3.
DRAGS TO RETURN
For a 25th time, the NHRA Northwest Nationals will be held at Pacific Raceways – next summer, Aug. 3-5.
The only mystery was the Seattle race’s place in the “Western swing” sequence with Denver and Sonoma, Calif. Just like last month, it will be the final stop – and go head-to-head with Seafair.
