For a second consecutive week, the Lincoln High Abes eclipsed the 500-yard mark in total offense.
This time, they won.
Running back Emmanuel Thompkins bulled his way to another big game – 189 rushing yards and four touchdowns – and the Abes beat Enumclaw, 50-21, on Friday at Lincoln Bowl.
Even though 492 of Lincoln’s 515 yards came on the ground, the one pass the Abes did attempt – and complete – proved to be a decisive one at the end of the first half.
After Enumclaw cut it to 22-14 on Peter Nordby’s 11-yard touchdown pass to Bryson Grant with 2:10 remaining, the Abes started at their own 19-yard line – and proceeded to rack up 58 rushing yards in 90 seconds.
Then, coach Mike Merrill called the perfect play – a pass. And Richard Johnson lofted it out there perfectly to Julius Colwash, who was wide open in the right flat. He caught it and easily rumbled 23 yards for the score with 22.3 seconds to go.
“It was huge,” Merrill said.
Thompkins, who rushed for 313 yards in the Abes’ 35-27 loss last week against Stadium, was a tough guy to bring down. He had six runs of 10 or more yards.
“I’ve worked a lot harder, and found out what I needed to do better,” said Thompkins, now a senior. “And I’ve made myself a lot better.”
At No. 2 Lakes 57, Capital 7: Quarterback David Wood threw for 185 yards and three TDs, and ran for 100 yards, including a 67-yard touchdown run, in the blowout victory. Five players scored touchdowns for Lakes, which led 50-0 at halftime.
At No. 6 Peninsula 52, Wilson 21: Danny Welstad scored three touchdowns, increasing his total to 13 in three games, and Peninsula scored on all seven of its first-half possessions.
“We wanted to get off to a fast start and avoid any kind of complacency,” Seahawks coach Ross Filkins said. “It was good to see a good start.”
Auburn Mountainview 45, at Foss 7: Victor Korchenny scored five touchdowns – on runs of 31, 6, 8 and 37 yards and on a 24-yard fumble recovery – to lead the Lions.
Foss avoided the shutout when Marcos Jones caught a 33-yard TD pass from Nick Burton in the fourth quarter.
No. 10 Bonney Lake 33, at Timberline 28: After building a 20-point first-quarter lead, Bonney Lake held off a Blazers’ rally, making a defensive stand to secure the victory. E.J. Harris ran for four TDs for the Panthers.
NARROWS 4A
At No. 6 Olympia 30, South Kitsap 8: A quick start – the Bears led 24-0 at halftime – propelled Olympia to a win over the previously undefeated Wolves in the league opener.
“It was a great game for our defense,” Olympia coach Bill Beattie said.
The Bears came out throwing behind quarterback Trevor Houser, who attempted 23 passes in the first half. Houser’s 17-yard TD pass to Kyel Alfonso gave Olympia a 30-0 lead in the third quarter.
“Trevor is a great quarterback, and he has a good handle on what’s going on,” Beattie said. “And, our offensive line did a good job of protecting Trevor and opening some holes for our running backs.”
SPSL NORTH
Jefferson 8, Auburn 7: A gutsy 2-point conversion call in the fourth quarter gave the Raiders their first win over Auburn since 1994.
“We’re feeling incredible,” Jefferson coach Dean Peck said.
After throwing a 2-yard touchdown to Gunner Sonnenfield, Kyle Williams ran in the conversion out of the “swinging gate” formation.
Auburn came close to rallying, but running back Darnell Haggans was tackled inches from the goal line as the clock expired.
SPSL SOUTH
At Emerald Ridge 41, Spanaway Lake 12: Running back Ashanti Kindle highlighted the Jaguars’ offensive explosion, rushing for 121 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Jake Sommer added three short-yardage scoring runs.
SPSL 2A
At Franklin Pierce 28, Clover Park 19: After allowing two defensive touchdowns in the first quarter, the Cardinals scored 28-unanswered points. Iopu Ignacio ran for 138 yards and two touchdowns for FP.
EVERGREEN
At No. 4 Tumwater 42, No. 7 W.F. West 7: Tight end Zach Wimberly scored five touchdowns, helping the Thunderbirds overcome the loss of their starting quarterback in the conference opener. Senior quarterback Daniel Hinkle was injured on the game’s second play. Wimberly stepped in initially – eventually giving way to sophomore Jayden Croft – and scored on a 59-yard run on his first snap.
