Tacoma families with school-age kids, prepare for a shorter winter vacation and a longer wait until summer. Does it make you feel better to know you’ll get a longer Thanksgiving break?
To make up for the eight-day teachers strike, the school district and the teachers union agreed to add nine full days to the calendar and subtract one scheduled half day this fall. (Half days count as full days on the academic calendar.)
The nine additional school days include:
• Dec. 19 and 20. That means the winter break is shortened by two days.
• The snow makeup days of Feb. 17 and May 25. That means there is no slack left in the calendar in case of inclement weather.
• Five days tacked on at the end of the school year. The final bell will now ring on June 19 – possibly later if the district has to cancel classes because of snow or other reasons. June 13, which is now a school day, had been on the calendar as the third-and-final snow makeup day.
The half-day of school that’s been converted to a full day off is Nov. 23. That means families and school staff will have a five-day Thanksgiving weekend.
