Discussions on North Coast steelhead populations, and ungulate population objectives are on the agenda when the state Fish and Wildlife Commission meets Oct. 7-8.
At the commission’s request, Department of Fish and Wildlife staff will give a briefing on the stock status of steelhead on the north coast within the context of the Statewide Steelhead Management Plan. The commission also will hear about the status of the Snider Creek Hatchery program and the department’s management of an infectious virus in hatchery steelhead stocks.
Kirt Hughes, Region 6 fish manager, Ron Warren, regional fish program manager, and Mike Gross, district fish biologist, are scheduled to discuss the matter.
Jerry Nelson, deer and elk section manager, and Donny Martorello, carnivore, furbearer and special species manager, are scheduled give a briefing on criteria used for setting population objectives for deer, elk, moose, mountain goat and big horn sheep.
Meeting the governor: The commission members are scheduled to meet Gov. Chris Gregoire at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 7 in the governor’s office in the Legislative Building. State law requires the commission to meet with the governor to review and discuss basic goals and objectives, as well as review the performance of the department in implementing fish and wildlife policies.
Wolf management: The commission will hold a special meeting Oct. 6 for more briefings on and discuss various aspects of the department’s final recommended wolf conservation and management plan. The commission will hear public testimony near the end of the day.
