One man was taken to the hospital and another treated by paramedics Thursday after a house near Gig Harbor erupted in flames.

The homeowner was taken to Tacoma General Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation and possible burns. The other person was treated at the scene for minor cuts and then released.

Key Peninsula firefighters were called to the home in the 13700 block of 137th Street KPN just after 2:20 a.m., said Guy Allen, division chief for the fire district.

A neighbor reported the flames and said the homeowner had been retrieving animals from inside the burning building.

By the time firefighters arrived, the homeowner was outside and the home was engulfed in flames, Allen said. One dog is still missing.

Firefighters were able to douse the flames, but not before they caused $186,000 in damage to the house and its contents, Allen said.

The homeowner told KIRO TV he awoke to find the home on fire. His son, who lives a few doors down, came running to the father’s home to help out.

Investigators had not yet determined what caused the blaze, Allen said.
