1: Got Gervais?
The name dots last week’s top SPSL performances. Quarterback Rhys Gervais, right, passed for 352 yards and four TDs in Puyallup’s 35-28 come-from-behind win over Curtis. And after Auburn Mountainview upset No. 10 Bonney Lake, 33-28, coach Jared Gervais has the Lions at 4-1.
2: Developmental mode
The Auburn-Curtis matchup has been the biggest intra-SPSL draw in the past few years. This season, both teams are 2-3 – and meet tonight in Auburn. “We’re both kind of in the same boat, getting inexperienced groups caught up,” Trojans coach Gordon Elliott said.
3: Hornet’s nest
It apparently just took an injection of civic pride to get the White River football team headed in the right direction. Joe Sprouse, a 2000 Hornets graduate and former all-state linebacker, has coached the team to first place in the SPSL 2A (4-1 overall, 3-0 league) – and on track for its first winning season since 2005.
4: May others play?
Federal Way tailback D.J. May (broken rib) will be out for at least tonight’s game against Beamer – and maybe longer after suffering the injury last week against Bethel. Zeek McNeal, who ran for 96 yards in relief, will start for the Eaglesagainst the Titans.
5: Armed and dangerous
Quick, who is the leading passer in the state? It isn’t Skyline High’s Max Browne (1,518 yards), or Mercer Island’s Jeff Lindquist (1,081 yards) – two big-time names. Instead, it’s Bonney Lake’s Chris Brown (139-of-239, 1,749 yards, 18 TDs), who has posted two 400-yard passing games.
