The Defense Department on Wednesday confirmed that an Army sergeant from the South Sound who was killed in Afghanistan this week died from combat-related injuries.
Sgt. Nathan Wyrick, 34, listed Enumclaw as his hometown. Friends told The News Tribune on Tuesday that he was active at a church in Lakewood. He graduated from Franklin Pierce High School in 1996.
Wyrick died Monday in Kandahar Province while serving with the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team of the 10th Mountain Division. A spokeswoman from his home station of Fort Drum, N.Y., said the “circumstances surrounding his death are currently under investigation.”
Wyrick was a supply specialist who joined the Army in March 2006. He served in Iraq with a Joint Base Lewis-McChord unit from August 2008 to August 2009, and he deployed to Afghanistan out of Fort Drum in March .
Wyrick is survived by his wife, Rachel, and four sons.
