The Environmental Protection Agency is asking the Puget Sound Partnership to return more than $120,000 in grants because the EPA says the agency’s internal controls against fraud are weak.
An EPA report says the Partnership has been careless in tracking and spending funds, KUOW reported.
The EPA review of contracts from 2007 to 2009 found “a near total lack of certification” that the agency received the goods and services for which it paid.
The EPA found no evidence of fraud, but officials said the partnership’s consistent lack of internal controls is a risk.
The Puget Sound Partnership will not appeal the EPA findings. Officials said it has revamped the way it does business to ensure contracts and expenditures are well-documented.
