The eastbound Nalley Valley viaduct construction project got off to an official start Friday with a ceremonial ground breaking beneath the existing viaduct, which opened 30 years ago today.
The $115 million project, which includes a new eastbound viaduct connecting state Highway 16 with Interstate 5, will take 2½ years to complete.
The project, to be built by Woodinville-based Mowat Construction Co., is the counterpart to the westbound Nalley Valley project, which streamlined the interchange for westbound traffic. The westbound project was completed in June.
In addition to the new viaduct, the eastbound project will add I-5 connections (both north and south) to the Sprague Avenue overpass.
Construction will begin Tuesday, said state Department of Transportation spokeswoman Lisa Copeland.
