Work continues to progress on the Elwha Dam removal project.
Late last week, the log boom that keeps boats from drifting over the dam was removed. Without the boom in place, there is no barrier between the remaining reservoir and the moving river as it flows over and down the new diversion channel. These factors make the area around the dam extremely unsafe for boating and other forms of recreation.
As a result, the exposed reservoir areas of Lake Aldwell and the remaining Lake Aldwell are closed to public use.
Last week crews also began demolition of the penstocks at Elwha Dam. The penstocks are the large metal pipes leading from the dam to the powerhouse.
At Glines Canyon Dam, crews continue to deepen and enlarge the dam’s four notches. The goal is to lower the reservoir an additional four feet by this week.
People interested in the project can check nps.gov/olym/naturescience/dam-removal-blog.htm for the latest news, photos and video links about removal of the Elwha dams.
