COUGARS’ OPPONENT THIS WEEK

CALIFORNIA (4-4 OVERALL, 1-4 PACIFIC-12 CONFERENCE)

3:30 P.M. SATURDAY, AT&T PARK, SAN FRANCISCO

TV: ROOT SPORTS RADIO: 1240-AM, 770-AM, 104.3-FM

COACH: JEFF TEDFORD (76-46, 10TH YEAR)

Last week: Lost to UCLA, 31-14

Against the Cougars: California leads, 42-25-5. The Golden Bears won last year in Pullman, 20-13.

Washington connections: Starting defensive end Trevor Guyton starred at Redmond High School, and backup defensive end Deandre Coleman played at Garfield in Seattle. Jed Barnett, the backup kicker and punter, attended Union in Camas. Offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Jim Michalczik graduated from Port Angeles High and played on WSU’s 1988 Aloha Bowl team with Cougars coach Paul Wulff.

Did you know: The game, originally scheduled to be televised in California only, was picked up by Root Sports on Monday.

Scouting report: Tedford, the winningest coach in Cal history, is getting every bit as much heat from fans as Wulff. The Bears have lost four out of five since a 3-0 start and are tied for last in the Pac-12 North with WSU. Tedford is considering a change at quarterback after Zach Maynard threw four interceptions last week. Maynard’s backup is inexperienced Allan Bridgford, a redshirt sophomore. Keenan Allen (Maynard’s half-brother) is one of the leading receivers in the country. The Bears are big, athletic and physical on defense. Inside linebacker Mychal Kendricks, Cal’s leading tackler, struggled last week with a cast on his broken thumb.
