The personal bankruptcy cases of Tacoma developers Tom Price and Hyun Um continue to limp along.

At a status hearing Monday afternoon, Judge Paul Snyder tried to find out the plan for resolving it, and for paying the lawyers who have been working on the cases for more than a year. It was an unsatisfactory episode for everyone.

The number of Whatcom County residents filing for bankruptcy rose in the first month of 2012.

Last month 63 local residents filed for bankruptcy, up from 54 in December, according to the latest data from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court Western District in Seattle. It's also up from a year earlier, when 55 filings took place.

In recent years, Whatcom County bankruptcy filings have peaked in the first quarter of the year. The five-year monthly peak was in February 2010, when 83 filings took place.

Whatcom bankruptcy filings rise in February

The number of Whatcom County bankruptcy filings in February were slightly higher than the previous month.

Last month 65 filings were reported locally, up from 63 in January, according to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court Western District in Seattle. While up from the previous month, it's down from a year earlier, when 74 filings took place.

Nearly three-quarters of last month's filings were Chapter 7 personal bankruptcies; the rest were Chapter 13 reorganization filings.
