  BELLINGHAM - An 18-year-old woman who was walking through a crosswalk suffered serious injuries when she was struck by a car that failed to stop for her Tuesday afternoon, May 1.

  About 12:55 p.m. the woman was walking east toward the Cordata bus station, in a crosswalk about 25 feet north of Calluna Court, when she was hit by a 1993 Mazda 626, said Bellingham police spokesman Mark Young.

  Police don't know how fast the car was going, but the woman's injuries were considered "very serious," Young said. She was taken to St. Joseph hospital.

  The 22-year-old WWU student was walking home from a friend's house about 3 a.m. in the 1000 block of High Street when she was pushed down from behind, said Bellingham Police spokesman Mark Young.

  The men, who were wearing dark hoodies, demanded money, so the woman handed over some cash. Young declined to confirm the university's report that $5 was taken.

  BELLINGHAM - A 90-year-old woman was taken to the hospital after her SUV crashed near the edge of a shallow retention pond Wednesday evening, May 9, in north Bellingham.

  About 6:40 p.m., the woman was driving eastbound in a 25 mph zone when she lost control of her 2006 Ford Freestyle in the 700 block of East Kellogg Road, said Bellingham police spokesman Mark Young. Police don't know how fast she was going or what caused her to lose control of the vehicle.

  The Ford swerved off the road, through a fence and to the edge of a retention pond. The SUV's left rear tire came to a stop over the bank, but the car was not submerged in the water, Young said.
