Sumner School District’s temporary superintendent had his contract extended by a year, following action by the Sumner School Board.
The board initially planned for Craig Spencer to fill in for the current school year only. Board members instead have decided to keep Spencer in the post through June 2013.
“The board is delighted to have a continuation of Craig’s experience and leadership skills in the role of superintendent,” board President Sherm Voiles said. “We know he will continue to serve students, families and staff as a leader upon whom they can depend.”
Spencer said he’s honored to lead a dedicated team of educators in Sumner through “challenging and changing times.”
“I’m committed to strengthening the culture that has always been the heart of Sumner – success for students and staff every day,” he said.
The board named Spencer temporary superintendent last summer after a divisive break with previous Superintendent Gil Mendoza. In June, the board signed a separation agreement with Mendoza, who had been superintendent since July 2007. Spencer began his new job July 1.
He has worked in the school district for 25 years as a teacher; elementary school principal; director of curriculum, instruction and assessment; and most recently as assistant superintendent.
His annual salary is $160,000, an increase of $29,000 over his previous salary.
Board members will kick off a search for a new superintendent for the 8,000-student district in August. They pledged the search will include recruiting the best candidates and listening to constituents.
