South Sound residents who love the outdoors will have the chance to see some of the best outdoor films when the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour comes to Tacoma and Olympia.

The tour is a showcase of the some of the best films shown at the festival that ended in late November. Each year, the tour visits 32 countries, reaching more than 245,000 people at more than 635 screenings.

Films on the world tour include different themes such as adventure sports, environment, mountain culture and heritage, as well as different styles, ranging from action-filled shorts to longer, more comprehensive films and amateur and professional productions.

Organizers for each show will choose from 30 films that make up the tour, tailoring their choices to meet the interest of viewers in each location, said Ron Jones, who is helping organize the Olympia screenings.

“We choose six to eight different films of varied length for each night. We strive to cover all sport themes, from climbing, trekking, kayaking, culture and environment,” Jones said.

The Tacoma show will be Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. at the Rialto Theatre, 901 Broadway Ave., Tacoma.

Tickets are $15 for general admission; $13 for Mountaineers members, UPS students, faculty and staff with ID. They can be purchased from the Rialto box office or by phone at 253-591-5894 or 800-291-7593.

This screening is presented by the Tacoma Mountaineers and the University of Puget Sound Outdoors Program.

The Olympia showings will be Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. and Dec. 4 at 6 p.m. at the Capitol Theater, 206 E. Fifth Ave, Olympia. Different films will be shown each night.

You can get tickets for the Olympia showings in advance at The Alpine Experience and Olympic Outfitters in downtown Olympia, 360-956-1699, online at brownpapertickets.com or at the box office the night of the event.

The cost is $13 for Saturday, and $11 on Sunday. Members of the Mountaineers and Olympia Film Society, students and military with an ID will get $2 off Sunday’s price. Tickets for both nights are $22 or $20 for Mountaineers, society members and students with ID.

This stop is hosted by the Olympia Mountaineers, in partnership with the Olympia Film Society, The Alpine Experience and Olympic Outfitters.
