Sometimes, just liking where you are is enough.

Sometimes, just liking where you are is enough.

After the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association’s latest reclassification cycle, which will be in effect for two years starting in 2012-13, Peninsula High School and Bonney Lake High School were eligible to become Class 2A members.

Both schools are satisfied with their opt-up standing in the South Puget Sound League 3A, and have decided to remain in that league.

“We are kind of on the border (in enrollment numbers), but we are definitely staying 3A,” Peninsula athletic director Lyle McIntosh said. “We have sent in our opt-up papers.”

In the Sumner School District, opt-up decisions are left up to the individual schools, district AD Tim Thomsen said.

Sumner and Bonney Lake are 2A-eligible. Sumner will stay in the SPSL 2A while Bonney Lake – after careful review – has chosen to stay in the SPSL 3A.

“There was quite a bit of discussion,” Thomsen said. “Bonney Lake took more time to seek input, and took a survey of staff, parents, students and the community, along with considering seven different factors. …

“They just felt 3A was something that helped define their school.”

Official reclassification numbers are expected to be released today or Friday by the WIAA, said Conor Laffey, the WIAA’s sports and activities information manager.
