Rogers Rams wrestler Andy Nelson experienced the thrill of competing at the Class 4A state tournament at the Tacoma Dome last February.

The 152-pounder didn’t win a match at Mat Classic, but his memories of his experience are motivating him to reach new heights.

“Last year, I was a state qualifier as a sophomore, which is what I wanted to do,” he said. “This year, I want to place at state and see what happens from there.”

Nelson, who plans to compete in the 160-pound weight division this year, said he expects to be one of the top wrestlers in the South Puget Sound League South Division. He’s been wrestling since was 5.

“Most of the good wrestlers that were in the 160-pound division last year have graduated,” Nelson said. “I was one of the only sophomores in the 152-pound division last year, too. I think that gives me a big advantage.”

Nelson said he thoroughly enjoys the atmosphere at Rogers High School.

“My whole family went here,” he said. “My grandpa taught here and started the boys soccer program here. All my uncles went here. It’s just a cool place to be.”

The Herald recently asked Nelson a few questions about his life away from the wrestling mat.

The Herald: What is your biggest pet peeve?

AN: People that chew really loud. I hate that.

TH: What is your favorite movie of all time?

AN: “Rudy.” He was a small guy who comes up and did big things. I’m kind of a small guy, and I like that.

TH: What is your favorite restaurant in Puyallup?

AN: Don’s Drive-In downtown. They have good burgers and shakes.

TH: What is your favorite hobby away from wrestling?

AN: I like playing football at the YMCA. I like going there to play football and lift weights.

TH: What would you do if you had $1 million?

AN: Help my family out and pay stuff off. I would help my grandparents out, too.

TH: What is something unique about you that nobody would know?

AN: I’m 50 percent Norwegian.

TH: Who is your pick to win the Super Bowl this year?

AN: The Green Bay Packers. They’re undefeated. I’m not really a fan of them, but they are the best team in the league right now.
