Eastern Washington kicker Mike Jarrett put together the best season of his college career this fall.

Jarrett, who graduated from Puyallup High School in 2007, broke school records in career extra points (143) and career points by a single player (236), and his 89.9 percent success rate on field goals was the best single-season individual performance in school history.

Jarrett nailed went 16-for-18 on field-goal attempts this fall and 38-for-39 on extra-point attempts.

The Eagles, who play in the Big Sky Conference in the NCAA’s Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA), went 6-5 a year after they won the national championship.

“I was really stoked with the year I had,” Jarrett said. “It was a good season for me. I gave it a 100-percent effort and focus, and it paid off. It was awesome, and I had a blast.”

Eastern Washington linebacker Grant Williams said Jarrett’s ability to kick under pressure was evident throughout his career.

“Mike was pretty much automatic the entire year,” Williams said. “Coach (Beau) Baldwin didn’t hesitate at all to send the field goal team out there. His kicking ability was an asset for our team. He was just always so consistent.”

Jarrett said this season was a tough one after Eastern Washington’s 2010 championship campaign.

“For us seniors, it was obviously a difficult year for us,” he said. “One of our biggest goals was to make another run at the national championship, and unfortunately, we were not able to do that.

“We started off 0-4 and lost a few really close games to Washington and Montana early on. We had a lot of our starters go down with injuries. Dealing with that injury bug made things difficult for us this year.”

The future is bright for Jarrett, whether or not he decides to pursue a pro football career or one as a lawyer.

“Right now, I’m in the process of applying to law school,” he said. “That is the next big goal I’m trying to attack. I also have been invited to a couple of kicking combines. I’m not sure if I’m going to attend those yet or not.

“I’m honored and humbled to be invited to the combines. I’m keeping my options open with football. It is something I love to do, and I’m not totally ready to set that aside yet.”
