Running game success overshadowed by defeat

Seattle – The Seattle Seahawks pulled off a couple of accomplishments Saturday that no other team had managed against the San Francisco 49ers this season.

A 4-yard run by Marshawn Lynch in the fourth quarter marked the first rushing touchdown against the 49ers since late last season. And Lynch’s 107 yards on 21 carries represented the first time a back had run for 100 yards against the San Francisco defense since 2009, ending a streak of 36 games.

However, for the most part, the Seahawks expressed little pride in the accomplishments.

“It was nice to do that, but it doesn’t really mean too much when we lose,” center Max Unger said. “It’s great that we did that, but it doesn’t really mean too much.”

Lynch didn’t speak with reporters after the 19-17 loss.

However, fullback Michael Robinson anticipated what Lynch would have said.

“I’m pretty sure he’s not excited about it because we lost,” Robinson said. “It doesn’t mean much when you lose a game like this. A tough one to swallow today.”

San Francisco hadn’t allowed a rushing touchdown since the second-to-last game of the 2010 season and hadn’t allowed a 100-yard rusher since Green Bay’s Ryan Grant did it on Nov. 22, 2009.

“They’ve been playing well all year,” Seattle guard Robert Gallery said. “They’ve got a good defense, obviously.”

And in light of that, coach Pete Carroll, at least, was willing to express some satisfaction in what the running game accomplished.

“They’re the best in the NFL,” he said. “Today, our guys blocked them like other teams that we’ve played. I thought it was really, really stellar on our guys’ part. Nobody has blocked them like that. Somebody said they hadn’t allowed a 100-yard rusher in 36 games or some crazy number like that. I can see why. Those guys are really good.”

The Seahawks rolled up 126 yards on 27 rushing attempts. And in running for more than 100 yards for the seventh consecutive game, they also impressed San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh.

“That’s the way Marshawn plays all the time,” he said. “I couldn’t say if there’s any difference from Game One to this game, or throughout his whole career. He’s just a great back.”
