Mid-Columbia Meals on Wheels earned a "Magnet Accreditation" from the Meals on Wheels Association of America.

The accreditation is given to Meals on Wheels programs that demonstrate excellence in nutrition services.

Mid-Columbia Meals on Wheels is the first and only senior nutrition program in Washington to receive this accreditation.

Mid-Columbia Meals on Wheels is the charity selected by Kennewick-based CityIntros for February, March and April receive of donations resulting from proceeds via discount coupons from Tri-City businesses.

CityIntos Charity Deals at cideals.com offers online marketing to local businesses with proceeds going to a local charity every three months. During February, Meals on Wheels will receive 50 percent of the proceeds, then 10 percent in the next two months.

Participating businesses include Burger Ranch, Casa Vino Wine Bar, Dax's Bar, Grand Central Coffee Station, Mocha Express, Parkade Bar, Uptown Tavern and Ty's Tavern.

1,000 books donated to Reading Foundation

Mission Support Alliance employees collected and donated more than 1,000 children's books Tuesday to the Children's Reading Foundation of Mid-Columbia.

More than a third of the books were new. The donation will be used for a program that supplies books to first-time teachers, schools, in-home day cares and for "reading baskets" in waiting areas at Mid-Columbia businesses.

Mission Support Alliance also gave the Reading Foundation a $10,000 check for its Books for Babies Program, which provides books for parents of newborns to take home from the hospital.

Registration under way for summer reading

Registration is under way for the Mid-Columbia Libraries' summer reading program and readers can start recording hours June 1.

Those who read 15 hours by Aug. 24 can enter to win a number of electronic reading devices, from a LeapFrog Tag Junior prize pack for young children to an iPad 3 or computerized telescope for adults. Youths who finish their reading will be able to claim a free book.

Kids author Shea tours Tri-Cities this week

Children's author and illustrator Bob Shea will appear at a Kennewick bookstore and branch of Mid-Columbia Libraries and several elementary schools as he tours the Mid-Columbia.

Shea's Dinosaur vs. Bedtime has won several awards, and his work has also appeared on cable television channels such ash Nick Jr. and Noggin.

He will be at Barnes & Noble at 6 p.m. Wednesday -- sponsored by the Children's Reading Foundation of the Mid-Columbia -- to sell his books and stage a door prize drawing. Shea will be at the Kennewick branch of Mid-Columbia Libraries at 6 p.m. Thursday for a book talk and signing.

The American Guild of Organists Mid-Columbia Chapter is having a "Pedal, Pipes and Pizza" event.

The event is from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Monday at St. Joseph Church, 520 S. Garfield, Kennewick.
