The Port of Olympia has received grant funds from the Salmon Recovery Funding Board for its habitat restoration project at Mission Creek in Priest Point Park. The port is set to spend $120,000 toward the project and the salmon board will contribute $60,000.

The port is collaborating on the project with the South Puget Sound Salmon Enhancement Group – which partnered with the port to request the grant funds – and the City of Olympia. The project is expected to be finished by the end of 2012. The port grant was among about $30 million in Salmon Recovery Funding Board grants to help restore salmon habitat.

Phase 3 of the Smuggler's Slough restoration project obtained an $804,000 grant from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for acquisition of 101 acres of wetlands and salt marsh along the lower reach of the slough off Lummi Bay, south of Ferndale.

To complete the acquisition of conservation rights on the properties, and to make habitat improvements, Lummi Nation will contribute $350,000 and the Salmon Recovery Funding Board will add another $125,000, Ecology spokesman Curt Hart said.
