The Seattle Mariners signed veteran reliever George Sherrill to a contract for the 2012 season on Friday.

The 34-year-old left-hander appeared in 51 games with the Atlanta Braves last season, going 3-1 with a 3.00 earned run average. He ended the 2011 campaign on the 15-day disabled list with left elbow inflammation.

Sherrill reached the majors with Seattle in 2004 and pitched for the Mariners for four years before he was dealt to Baltimore in the ballyhooed Erik Bedard trade prior to the 2008 season.

In 440 career trips out of the bullpen, Sherrill has compiled a 19-17 record, 56 saves and a 3.68 ERA while limiting left-handed hitters to a .180 batting average. He has also played for the Dodgers.
