A driver who police say was drunk smashed into the MultiCare building in the 9300 block of Bridgeport Way on Saturday night, causing serious damage to the clinic’s urgent care waiting room.
Lakewood police spokesman Lt. Chris Lawler said the suspect was an airman at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Lawler said the suspect tried to wrestle a phone away from a person who saw the accident to prevent the witness from calling police to the scene.
The suspect reportedly was in the custody of military police.
No one was in the clinic when the crash took place, and the waiting room was the only portion of the building damaged, MultiCare spokeswoman Marce Edwards said.
A construction crew was expected to make repairs today and the clinic was expected to open for normal business hours Tuesday.
Multicare kept the urgent care clinic open Sunday by moving urgent care operations to a primary care wing, Edwards said.
