The events that led to the death of Mount Rainier National Park ranger Margaret Anderson started with a shooting hours earlier in King County.

Sunday

3 a.m. Four people are shot during a house party in Skyway near Renton. Benjamin Colton Barnes is a suspect in the shooting.

10:11 a.m. Anderson is fatally shot at Barn Flat, a mile below Paradise. Barnes is believed to be the gunman.

Midnight Visitors and park staff members who have been under lockdown at the Jackson Visitor Center are released in small groups, with police escort.

Monday

3:30 a.m. The last of those at the visitor center leave the park.

10:45 a.m. The body of a man believed to be Barnes is spotted in Paradise Creek, near Narada Falls.

1 p.m. A parade of Pierce County Sheriff’s Department and other emergency vehicles begins pouring out of the park, signaling the end of the incident.

2:15 p.m. Officials announce that the body has been confirmed as that of Barnes.
