Huskies' Wroten garners Pac-12 player of week

For the second time this season, a Huskies player has earned Pacific-12 Conference player of the week honors in men’s basketball.

For the second time this season, a Huskies player has earned Pacific-12 Conference player of the week honors in men’s basketball.

Freshman guard Tony Wroten was recognized for the week of Dec. 26 to Jan. 1, after averaging 21.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists in Washington’s home sweep of Oregon State and Oregon.

Against the Beavers, Wroten led the Huskies with 26 points and nine rebounds. He was 10 of 16 from the field and handed out four assists with just two turnovers.

On Saturday against Oregon, Wroten had 17 points, five assists, four rebounds and added a blocked shot and a steal.

Wroten ranks second in the Pac-12 in scoring at 16.8 points a game.

Teammate C.J. Wilcox also earned player of the week honors to start the season.

TOP 25 MEN

At No. 4 Baylor 61, Texas A&M 52: With its highest ranking ever and already with the best start in school history, the Bears opened Big 12 play accomplishing another first.

Perry Jones III had 14 points with 12 rebounds, and Baylor remained undefeated with a victory over the Aggies for their first 14-game winning streak in school history.

The Bears scored the first eight points of the game and lead throughout against Texas A&M (9-4, 0-1).

Elston Turner had 21 points for the Aggies, which has lost three of its last four games.

No. 21 Virginia 57, at LSU 52: LSU let an opportunity to defeat a second Top 25 team in two weeks slip away.

Sammy Zeglinski scored 17 points, including a big 3-pointer late in the game, to help the Cavaliers beat the Tigers (10-4) in a nonconference game.

Joe Harris added 14 points, also hitting a 3-pointer late, for the Cavaliers (13-1), who have won 11 straight games.

LSU coach Trent Johnson was not happy with his team’s defense on either 3-point shot.

“Not to take anything away from Virginia, but we had way too many breakdowns defensively,” Johnson said.

TOP 25 WOMEN

No. 5 Maryland 91, at Florida State 70: Laurin Mincy scored 23 points, Alyssa Thomas added 21 points and 10 rebounds, and Tiana Hawkins had 20 points and 13 rebounds as the Terrapins (14-0, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) remained unbeaten with a rout of the Seminoles (8-7, 0-1).

Alexa Deluzio tied a career high with 23 points for Florida State.

At No. 7 Duke 77, at Virginia 66: Tricia Liston had 18 points to lead four players in double figures for the Blue Devils (10-2, 1-0 ACC), who blew past the Cavaliers (12-3, 0-1).

At No. 8 Ohio State 84, Iowa 71: Samantha Prahalis scored 30 points, and Tayler Hill added 28 to rally the Buckeyes (15-0, 2-0) from a 15-point first-half deficit for a victory over the Hawkeyes (9-6, 1-1 Big Ten).

At No. 25 North Carolina 65, No. 12 Miami 63: Chay Shegog hit the go-ahead free throws with 1:11 left, helping the Tar Heels (11-2, 1-0 ACC) rally past the Hurricanes (11-3, 0-1).

No. 18 Purdue 64, at Illinois 63: Courtney Moses made a 3-pointer from the top of the key as time expired, giving the Boilermakers (12-3, 2-0 Big Ten) a win over the Fighting Illini (6-9, 0-2).

No. 22 Penn State 82, at Wisconsin 49: Maggie Lucas scored 18 points to lead the Nittany Lions (11-3, 1-1 Big Ten) over the Badgers (4-10, 0-2).

Lucas led a balanced attack for Penn State with Nikki Greene adding 14 points and Mia Nickson contributing 10 points and 14 rebounds.

ORANGE STILL JUICY

Syracuse is No. 1 in The Associated Press’ Top 25 for a fourth straight week, and Pittsburgh is out of the poll for the first time since the middle of 2009-10.

The Orange received 60 first-place votes from the 65-member national media panel. Kentucky, which moved up one spot to second, got the other five.

North Carolina, Baylor and Duke all jumped two places to third through fifth. Ohio State dropped from second to sixth after losing at Indiana. Missouri, Connecticut, Georgetown and Michigan State round out the top 10.

Louisville, which lost to Georgetown and Kentucky, dropped from fourth to 11th.

No. 23 Kansas State and No. 25 Gonzaga enter the rankings on six-game winning streaks. Creighton fell out from 21st. Pittsburgh, losers of three straight, dropped out from 22nd.

Baylor remains the unanimous No. 1 choice in The Associated Press women’s college basketball poll.

The Lady Bears received all the first-place votes for the fifth straight week after blowing out Mississippi Valley State in their only game.

The first five teams in the Top 25 remain unchanged. Connecticut is No. 2, followed by Notre Dame, Stanford and Maryland.
