Whatcom People: Students, 'social entrepreneurs' win recognition

- Several Whatcom County students were named to the fall honor roll at Oregon State University, in Corvallis.

From Bellingham: Mackenzie Allen, senior, liberal studies; Derek Compton, senior, construction engineering management; Madeline Horne, freshman, exploratory studies; Anna Jensen, freshman, animal sciences; William Moore, senior, radiation health physics; Chelsea Parker, senior, biochemistry and biophysics; and Chloe Tull, sophomore, history.

From Blaine: Jana Otero, freshman, pre-environmental engineering, 4.0 gpa.

- Edward Miller of Bellingham was named to the May-to-August Dean's List at Columbia College, in Columbia, Mo.

- Bo Brudwick received a $1,000 scholarship from the Grand Lodge of Daughters of Norway. A 2010 graduate of Ferndale High School, he is studying mechanical engineering at the University of Washington.

- Kelsey Vander Zouwen of Lynden Christian High School has been named a commended National Merit Scholarship student. Commended students place among the top 5 percent of more than 1.5 million students who enter the National Merit Scholarship Program by taking qualifying tests.

- Beth Pepper of Bellingham has been named a member of Phi Kappa Phi, a national honor society. Pepper is pursuing a master's degree in public health at Kansas State University.

- Jeana King and Debra Akre of Bellingham have been recognized as Paul Harris Fellows by Rotary International. Their awards were presented November 2011 at a North Bellingham Rotary Club meeting. King and Akre founded Tembo Trading Company, which promotes Kenyan products in the Northwest and uses the proceeds to support education projects in the African nation.
