Cougars fall to Utes in OT

Josh Watkins scored 20 points and made the winning jumper in overtime as Utah got its first Pacific-12 Conference win by beating Washington State, 62-60, on Thursday night in Salt Lake City.

Jason Washburn had 11 points, and Dijon Farr scored 10 before fouling out in regulation as the Utes rebounded from back-to-back losses of more than 30 points each.

Brock Motum had 27 points and eight rebounds, and Faisel Aiden scored 11 points, but the Cougars couldn’t overcome 10-of-22 free-throw shooting and crucial turnovers.

In overtime, WSU’s Reggie Moore missed a jumper with 12 seconds to go. Watkins rushed down the court, freed himself with a behind-the-back dribble and made a 14-foot jumper with 3.3 seconds remaining.

The Cougars had to go the full length of the court, and DaVonte Lacy dribbled off his leg out of bounds with 1.5 seconds to go. The Utes inbounded to Watkins, who threw the ball high in the air to run out the clock.

At Oregon State 92, California 85: Jared Cunningham and Ahmad Starks had 24 points apiece as the Beavers held off the Bears.

Angus Brandt added 14 points, and Joe Burton 13 for Oregon State. Jorge Gutierrez had 26 points for Cal.

The Beavers went ahead by as many as 16 before Cal scored 12 straight to close within 77-73 with five minutes remaining.

UCLA 65, Arizona 58: Travis Wear scored a career-high 20 points, his twin brother, David Wear, added 14 points, and the Bruins stopped a two-game conference skid by beating the Wildcats.

Solomon Hill had 16 points and 11 rebounds and Jesse Perry added 13 points for the Wildcats.

The game in Anaheim, Calif., was billed as the John R. Wooden Classic, which has typically been played as a doubleheader in December.

Carrick Felix scored a career-high 22 points, Trent Lockett had 19 points and nine rebounds, and Arizona State beat Southern California, 62-53, in Los Angeles. … Devoe Joseph scored a career-high 30 points to lead Oregon past Stanford, 78-67, in Eugene, Ore.

WOMEN’S HIGHLIGHTS

Jazmine Davis scored 21 of her game-high 27 points in the second half as Washington erased a two-point halftime deficit in a 75-67 victory over Colorado, which got 20 points from Chucky Jeffery and 18 from Julie Seabrook. … Brandi Thomas scored 18 points, and Washington State had 13 steals and forced 24 turnovers in beating Utah, 60-43. The Cougars outscored the Utes, 39-15 in the second half. … Davellyn Whyte led four Arizona players in double figures with 23 points as the Wildcats beat UCLA, 74-66. Whyte also had 10 rebounds. … Former Prairie High of Vancouver standout Ashley Corral scored 21 points in USC’s 60-48 win over cold-shooting Arizona State (17 of 57, 29.8 percent). … Nnemkadi Ogwumike had 32 points and 15 rebounds to lead No. 4 Stanford past Oregon, 93-70. … California built a 15-point halftime lead and cruised to a 73-56 road win over Oregon State.
