The contractor tearing down the old Nalley Valley viaduct will move from South Tacoma Way to South Center Street starting Monday.
That means nighttime street closures and partial daytime closures on South Center Street through most of the week to protect motorists from falling concrete. Because of lower traffic volumes, South Center Street will be closed slightly longer each night than South Tacoma Way was.
Starting at 8 each night from Monday to Friday, crews will close all lanes of South Center Street between Pine and Wilkeson streets. Drivers will detour onto South Tacoma Way, and emergency responders will have access as safety allows.
South Center Street will reopen to one lane of traffic at 5 each following morning except for Saturday, when lanes will reopen at 7 a.m.
In addition to the total closures at night, drivers also can expect single-lane closures during the day on South Center Street except during commute times.
