How much was going to be left in the tank?
That was the question prior to Whitworth’s Northwest Conference men’s basketball showdown with the University of Puget Sound less than 24 hours after the Pirates needed double overtime to put away Pacific Lutheran.
The answer: Plenty.
Felix Friedt scored 21 points and grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds, Idris Lasisi added 21 points and No. 11 Whitworth picked up a big road win by knocking off No. 16 Puget Sound, 80-67, at Memorial Fieldhouse on Saturday.
Julian Fernandez was one of five Loggers to score in double figures, scoring a team-high 11 points.
UPS (11-2 overall, 3-1 NWC) also received 10 points each from Derek Jobe, Rex Holmes, Kaleb Shelton-Johnson and Riggs Yarbro.
“We just didn’t execute the offense the way we needed to tonight,” said UPS coach Justin Lundt. “Our defense wasn’t up to par. You can’t play that way against the conference’s best team and expect to win.”
The Loggers used a 9-0 run to establish their largest lead of the contest at 51-42 with 14 minutes, 14 seconds remaining in the game.
But Whitworth (11-2, 4-0), which has won five consecutive meetings with UPS, responded with a 15-2 run and limited the Loggers to just 16 points during the game’s final 14 minutes.
The Loggers return to the court on Tuesday against PLU in Parkland at 8 p.m.
Whitman 58, at Pacific Lutheran 57: Cameron Schilling’s straightaway 16-footer for the win bounced off the rim with 3 seconds to go, and the Missionaries (9-4, 2-2) held on.
James Conti’s lay-in with 18 seconds remaining for the Lutes (5-8, 2-2) cut it to 58-57. PLU immediately fouled, and Whitman’s Josh Duckworth missed the front end of a one-and-one free throw.
The Lutes then set up the play for Schilling, who led PLU with 16 points.
WOMEN
At UPS 74, Whitworth 68: Jocelyn Riordan scored all of her 10 points in the second half as the Loggers (7-6, 3-1) rallied to snap their four-game skid.
Whitworth (5-8, 1-3) led 45-38 with 13:57 to go before UPS went on a 12-2 run, capped by 3-pointers from Taylor Jones and Amanda Forshay, to grab a 50-47 advantage.
Whitman 64, at PLU 46: Kelly Peterson’s 3-pointer broke a 6-6 tie for the Missionaries, who never trailed after that, and went on to build a 17-point halftime lead in sending the Lutes (4-9, 1-3) to their fifth consecutive defeat.
