Boise police have made a video with tips on how you can better secure your home to deter criminals.
The video, featuring Charlene Miller, shows viewers how to conduct a security survey to determine weaknesses. Miller walks viewers through basic ways to improve locks, lighting and landscaping.
She recommends motion sensor lights and front-porch lights because they eliminate places where criminals might hide.
"When you light up the outside of your property, you really are deterring crime for your home and also for your neighborhood," Miller said.
As for landscaping, she said bushes and trees near doors and windows could provide hiding places for criminals. Keep all access doors to the private part of your property are locked at all times, she said. She also offers tips on deadbolts.
