The third time was the charm for Tacoma police trying to arrest a suspected drunken driver who twice fled from officers late Thursday.
Officers first spotted the man speeding in the 5400 block of South Tacoma Way just after 10:50 p.m., police spokesman Mark Fulghum said Friday. When officers turned on the cars’ emergency lights to stop him, the man sped off. Officers noted the car’s license plate but did not chase the man, Fulghum said.
“The way he was driving was not safe,” Fulghum said.
The officers broadcast the vehicle’s information to others working Thursday night.
Minutes later, officers saw the man at South 26th Street and Pacific Avenue. They switched on their emergency lights and tried to stop the car, but it again sped off.
A short time later, an officer in an unmarked car spotted the car near South 15th Street and Fawcett Avenue. The officer followed the car as marked patrol cruisers headed to the area. Officers got in position, stopped the car and took the driver into custody.
“That was the end of his run,” Fulghum said.
