  BELLINGHAM - Residents in the Bellingham and Lummi Reservation areas can find out whether they are in a tsunami evacuation zone on a new interactive website developed by the state Department of Natural Resources and other agencies.

  The site, nvs.nanoos.org/tsunami, reports tsunami watches or warnings, and includes a downloadable brochure explaining how to respond to a tsunami warning in Bellingham. The information is also available as an iPhone or Android app.

  The map on the website shows that only the edge of the waterfront in Bellingham is in a tsunami hazard zone, as is Marietta and the lowlands near the mouth of the Nooksack River. Not all of the county has been mapped.

  BELLINGHAM - After about 60 days in office, Mayor Kelli Linville says she is aiming for "fanatic discipline" on city spending.

  "That means in good times, we plan for bad times, and in bad times we can weather the storm," she told the City Council on Monday, March 12, as she delivered a report on her first weeks in office.

  Although city sales tax revenues have rebounded from 2009 lows, she noted that they remain below their peak levels of 2007 and 2008, and that continues to pose a challenge to city budgeting.

  BELLINGHAM - Housing advocates are asking the City Council to put a tax measure on the November ballot that would raise money for more affordable housing.

  As written now, the housing levy voters would be asked to approve would raise $21 million over seven years to provide shelter to 1,300 households. The bulk of the funds would be spent on building and preserving affordable homes. The proposal also sets aside $4 million for renter and home buyer assistance, and property purchases.

  This local investment in affordable housing should attract more than $70 million in additional funding from both private and public sources, according to levy backers.
