The reopening of the renovated ice arena at Sprinker Recreation Center in Spanaway scheduled for today has been delayed a week.

The public unveiling of the $6.5 million renovation was postponed in part because so many people who live near the arena are without power, said Pierce County spokesman Hunter George.

He said work on the arena is a couple of days behind schedule due to the weather, and that the recreation center parking lot is covered with ice.

The same schedule as previously announced will be followed next Saturday with public viewing of the ice arena at 9 a.m., grand reopening ceremonies at 10:30, and a “public skate cheapskate session” at 11:45.

In addition, the county-sponsored No Sun Fun Run scheduled for today on the Nathan Chapman Trail in the South Hill area has been postponed a week because of hazardous conditions along the wooded trail. Registration for the Jan. 28 event will start at 7:30 a.m., followed by the run at 10.
