Olympia Mountaineers courses on wilderness skills, basic climbing and alpine scrambling begin Tuesday.
The basic climbing course includes classroom and field instruction designed to provide the basic skills necessary to safely climb rock, snow and glaciated peaks of the Pacific Northwest. The fee is $250, which includes the classic mountaineering book “Freedom of the Hills.”
Alpine scrambling is non-technical climbing involving off-trail travel, often over rock, snow or brush, to mountain summits. Many Northwest summits are accessible by scramble routes. The course covers gear, route finding, avalanche awareness, rock and snow travel, ice-axe arrest and glissading. The fee is $150.
The skills course teaches basic skills for safe backcountry travel, day hikes and backpacking trips. The course fee is $25 for current members and $50 for non-members.
The classes start at 6:30 p.m. at the Knox Administration Center, 1113 Legion Way, Olympia. Registration is at 5:30 p.m.
Membership in The Mountaineers is required for these courses. Learn more at OlympiaMountaineers.org or call Bob Keranen at 360-340-1882.
