University Place is in line for a new police chief.
Rusty Wilder’s last day was Monday after serving as UP’s top cop since June 2010.
The city of 31,000 contracts with the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department for law enforcement services. Mayor Ken Grassi said the position is filled on a rotating basis. Typically the police chief serves for two to three years.
Under the contract, Sheriff Paul Pastor will select the new chief after consulting City Manager Steve Sugg. UP has sought a larger role in the selection process, Assistant City Manager Mariza Craig said, asking Pastor to consider a larger pool of qualified candidates and that they meet with the city’s executive staff and its public safety commission.
Sgt. Mike Blair will serve as interim chief until Pastor makes his selection. Craig said the position will be filled in March.
The Police Department’s accomplishments during Wilder’s tenure include hiring an investigator and moving into the civic building at Town Center.
