Introducing intercollegiate women’s athletics at the University of Puget Sound did not come without its hardships and sacrifices.

Such was the way on college campuses nationwide.

This weekend, the Loggers will celebrate 40 years of progress – and great success.

On Friday afternoon at the Wheelock Student Center on campus, the athletic department will air a film presentation looking back at its history of women’s sports at the university. Former campus intern Sylvia Smith produced and directed the documentary.

Show time is noon in the Murray Boardroom. Admission is free and open to the public.

At halftime of the Loggers’ women’s basketball game Saturday against Pacific, up to 50 former female student athletes will be honored. Also, a postgame reception will be held in Memorial Fieldhouse where the documentary will re-air.

Intercollegiate women’s athletics have been around in some form since 1888, but it was not until 1972 that the UPS athletic department, led by former athletic director Doug McArthur, funded intercollegiate varsity teams.

“This is a unique opportunity for us to stop and reflect on the history of our storied women’s programs and connect the current Puget Sound community with the pioneering women of our past,” said Robin Hamilton, a UPS associate athletic director and former Loggers softball coach.

“This anniversary event will continue to be celebrated into the spring and fall … as we look back and truly appreciate the process by which our women’s programs have evolved.”
